NOVEMBER 17TH MEETING
Please plan on coming to this meeting and hearing from James
Dowler, Director of the Palm Springs USO. Luncheon will
begin at 1130 at Desert Falls Country Club, Palm Desert. The USO
is looking for volunteers to work 4 hours a month at their Palm
Springs Airport Lounge which is primarily visited by Marines
traveling back and forth to 29 Palms. Jim has some great
stories to share with us about the good things that the USO does
for the Marines. The USO will be moving into a larger
lounge in January.
1/7 WARRIORS APPRECIATION STEAK BARBECUE
We found a lot of support from Palm Springs Ford and Fiesta Ford
who sent 44 employees and spouses to the October 15th barbecue
at 29 Palms. We plan to acknowledge their effort by
presenting both dealers with an Appreciation Plaque from the
Desert Cities MPMOH Chapter.
We also would like to thank Frank Gillette for arranging for all
of the Budweiser and Pepsi’s to be donated for the barbecue.
(Doc indicated that the donor would prefer to remain anonymous).
Doc always comes through with some form donations to make our
events successful.
Special thanks to Charlie Garbarini for his generous donation
which covered 19 Marines lunches. Quint Villanueva
rallied support from 14 of his neighbors in the Indian Ridge
Community who made donations for 34 Marine lunches.
George Stettler has a patriotic office assistant, Jane
Clark, who donated over 400 cookies for the barbecue. She
and her husband Doug also helped us at the OKTOBERFEST.
PALM DESERT GOLF CART PARADE
Once again, we thank Electric Car Distributors, Rancho Mirage
for their donation of an 8 passenger golf cart which we used in
the parade for our WW II Marines on board: Sam Huttenhower, Ray
Schum, Les Carlisle and Dorothee Irwin. Dick Partee drove
the cart with Marilyn Paige riding “shotgun”. Our other
members escorted the honored WW II Marines along El Paseo for
another tremendous crowd.
The beer served at the OKTOBERFEST was also donated by an
anonymous sponsor. Frank Gillette was responsible for making
this donation happen. We also thank Louise Stettler,
Karen Sullivan and volunteers; Bonnie Birch, Lisa Box, Doug &
Jane Clark for helping us run the beer business during the
parade. Jimmie Martin provided security at the beer
garden to satisfy certain requirements from the City and ABC.
We want to thank Carl Lewke for loaning us a couple of pop up
tents to provide shade at the OKTOBERFEST. Harry Covert
also loaned us a USC pop up tent which had the colors to go with
our Marines tent. It did draw interest from Trojan alumni and
lured them in for a cold beer.
Thanks to Bob Shepard, Bill Ross, Don Tully, Jim Olson, Jimmie
Martin, Gene McClendon and Karen Sullivan for joining us for the
early Sunday morning work party detail to help Charlie Garbarini
set up the OKTOBERFEST. It was a very warm morning. Some of us
needed to change shirts after getting the beer garden assembled
and ready for the Health Dept. and ABC inspection at 1000 and to
open for business at 1100. (I was proud that no one
suggested having a cold beer after the work was finished).
The Palm Springs Pipe Band, with bag pipes and drum,
joined us and provided marching music. They stopped
several times to play the Marine’s Hymn which drew a lot of
applause from the crowd. It was a warm day, so afterwards
the pipers as well as our Marines hurried back to the beer
garden for rounds of well deserved cold ones.
7TH MARINE REGIMENT BIRTHDAY BALL
We are the invited to join the 7th Marines on November 5th to
celebrate the 236th Marine Corps Birthday at the Renaissance
Esmeralda Resort, Indian Wells. So we bought two tables and will
be represented by the Mike Holquin‘s, George Moffatt‘s, Dick
Partee‘s, Bill Ross‘s, Buddy Sklar‘s, George Stettler‘s, Jim
Sullivan‘s, Quint Villanueva’s and Marilyn Paige. We plan to
show the 500 + New Breed Marines and wives that the Old Breed
Marines are not too old to have a good time.
MARINE CORPS LEAGUE 236th MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY LUNCHEON
Last call for buying tickets for this annual luncheon. November
10th, at Miracle Springs Resort and Spa, DHS. Tickets are
$35 for lunch. If you cannot attend, please sponsor a Marine
JROTC Cadets from Desert Hot Springs High School. This is a well
attended event. The proceeds will be donated by the Marine
Corps League to the DHSHS Marine JROTC program. We have always
supported our brothers in the Marine Corps League.
Guest Speaker will be LtCol Brian Neil, Executive Officer, 7th
Marine Regiment.
A donation for a cadet helps pay for the 65 JROTC cadets who
will be at the birthday luncheon and sitting in uniform at each
table. These cadets are impressive and reflect the
excellent leadership that Carl Lewke has provided.
If you can donate an additional $50 - you can help with
the printing costs for the program and have your name listed as
a sponsor. Call
(760) 288-7088 for more information. RSVP by November 5th.
MITCHELL PAIGE MIDDLE SCHOOL, LA QUINTA
To commemorate Veterans Day, Marilyn Paige, Pete Van
Vechten and Carl Brooks will attend two student assemblies on
November 10th to talk about what it means to be a veteran.
SGTMAJ MATT BROOKSHIRE
We had the pleasure of knowing him several years ago when he was
the 2/7 Sgt. Major. He then moved on to become the
Sergeant Major, Parris Island. Now, Brookshire will return
to 29 Palms to become MCAGCC Sergeant Major to replace SgtMaj
Harrison Tanksley at the end of November.
We will have SgtMaj Brookshire as our guest of honor at a
meeting in 2012.
DECEMBER CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON
We are planning on another Christmas luncheon like we did last
year. Bring your spouse and a toy for a girl and a boy
which will immediately be delivered to MCAGCC, 29
Palms just in time for Christmas. There are needy families
there that are depending on toy and food donations to make their
Christmas a little brighter. If you want to donate
additional toys, please do! Several of us will take the
donated toys up to MCAGCC, 29 Palms the next day to insure that
they are delivered for distribution to young enlisted families.
The luncheon will be on Thursday, December 15 at Desert Falls
Country Club at 1130. Reservations are required - space
will be limited to 48 people. Call (760) 901-5494 for
reservations.
ANNUAL 2012 DUES
Dues will be sent out in December for payment by the end of
January.zzz
FEBRUARY MEETING
As a change of venue, we are planning to hold the February 16th
meeting at DiCarlo’s Italian Café, at MCAGCC, 29 Palms.
This will enable our members in that area to join us. More
information forthcoming.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
